To convert a PDF to Excel with OnCloudPDF, select a PDF that contains text, choose how the sheets are laid out and click Convert to Excel. The tool finds text laid out in rows and columns and writes each table to an .xlsx sheet, with numbers stored as numbers. It works on PDFs with a text layer, not on scans, and it runs in your browser.

How to use PDF to Excel

  1. Select a PDF whose text you can select with the mouse (a scan has no text; use OCR PDF first).
  2. Choose one sheet per table, one per page, or everything on one sheet, and whether tables that continue on the next page are joined.
  3. Click Convert to Excel and look at the preview of the first table on the result.
  4. Download the .xlsx and open it in Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice or Google Sheets.

What it does and what it does not do

  • Only PDFs with a text layer can be read. A scanned PDF or a table saved as a picture produces no tables; the tool says so and suggests OCR PDF.
  • Tables are found from the alignment of text in rows and columns, with or without ruling lines (lines themselves are not read). Paragraphs of ordinary text are not turned into cells.
  • Merged cells are not rebuilt, a cell with several lines becomes several rows, and nested tables are flattened. Columns closer than about one character may merge into one. Always compare the result with the PDF.
  • Cells are written as numbers only when that is unambiguous (for example 1234.50 or $1,200.00, negative values in brackets). Values like 1,234 (thousands or decimals?), percentages, dates and codes with leading zeros stay as text on purpose.
  • Fonts, colours, borders and column widths of the PDF are not reproduced. The first row is bold and frozen only when it looks like a header.
  • Rotated text is ignored. Very long documents are limited by your browser memory.

Is my file uploaded?

The PDF is read in your browser with the PDF.js library and the workbook is built locally. Nothing is uploaded; the only downloads are the program files of the site.

Bank statements, invoices and reports

Statements and reports usually have a repeating header and a table that runs over several pages. Keep Join tables that continue on the next page switched on: tables with the same columns that start at the top of the next page are appended to the previous one and the repeated header row is dropped. Check totals and the last rows of each page after converting.

When no table is found

If you see a message that no tables were found, either the PDF is a scan, or its text is not laid out in clear columns. For a scan run OCR PDF first and then convert the OCR result. For free-flowing text use PDF to Text or PDF to Word instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Excel?

Select the PDF, click Convert to Excel and download the .xlsx. The tool detects tables from the layout of the text and writes each to a sheet.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

No. A scan has no text, only pictures. Run OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert the result.

Will the numbers be real numbers in Excel?

Yes when they are unambiguous, so you can sum them. Values such as 1,234 or 12% are kept as text because they could be read two ways; convert them in Excel if needed.

Does it handle a table that runs over several pages?

Yes, if the columns match and the table starts at the top of the next page. The pages are joined and a repeated header row is removed.

Why are some cells merged or split wrongly?

The tool reads alignment, not cell borders, so merged cells and cells with several lines are only approximated. Check the output against the PDF.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It is read and converted in your browser.
